Mark Ingram Becomes the First Ever Heisman Trophy Winner for Alabama

Copyright © 2009 Ed Bagley sophomore running back Mark Ingram has done something for the University of Alabama, the legendary quarterback Joe "Willie" Namath and Kenny Stabler and all other football players in Alabama could not do - take home a Heisman Trophy for the Crimson Tide faithful. Ingram elbowed out the runner Toby Gerhart of Stanford in the closest vote of 75-year history of the prize, to become the first player from Alabama to win the trophy as the best annual college football player. Only a difference of 28 points separate votes Gerhart 1304 Ingram, 1276. Ingram received 227 first-place votes to Gerhart of 222. Finishing third in the poll was Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, fourth was the Nebraska defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh, and 5 of the Florida was quarterback Tim Tebow. Tebow won the Heisman in its second year, two years ago. Colt McCoy was last year, when you run Sam Bradford of Oklahoma won the Heisman. While McCoy did not win the Heisman this year (many thought it would be because of their overall performance in the last 3 years), won several awards.

McCoy won the Maxwell Award honoring the best in the nation all-around players, the player Walter Camp Football Foundation Year for the second consecutive season, and the Davey O'Brien Award as the best quarterback of the nation. Nebraska Ndamukong Suh won the Chuck Bednarik as the Best Defensive Player of the nation, the Outland Trophy as the best interior lineman in the nation, the Lombardi Award as lineman in the country, Bronco Nagurski Trophy and the Best Player defense of the nation. Toby Gerhart of Stanford won the Doak Walker as Return of the nation's best runner. Eric Berry of Tennessee accepted the Jim Thorpe Award honoring the best defensive back. Notre Dame Golden Tate won the Biletnikoff as best receiver in the nation. Kai Forbath UCLA took home the Lou Groza Award as the best kicker in the nation and Georgia Drew Butler won the Ray Guy honor best punter in the nation. Brian Kelly of Cincinnati won the Coach of the Year on the same day he told his team he had accepted an offer to coach the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Kelly, an Irish Catholic, called Notre Dame play his dream job.
